Abstract

The role of the referee in upholding the fairness of a soccer competition still leaves the issue of trust. This study aims to analyse the role of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in building the perception of trust in soccer players. This research is a cross sectional study with the subject of 199 soccer players aged 17-19 years who are members of soccer clubs. VAR instruments are placed on two sides on the opposite goalpost. The VAR operator watches through the TV screen connected to the VAR. Ninety-eight players competed using VAR while 101 players without VAR. The unpaired t-test was used to analyse the difference in the average perception of trust in matches using VAR and without VAR. Statistical analysis in this study used the Mann-Whitney test. The results of this study indicate a slight increase of trust in the group with VAR, but the difference is not significant..
