The improvement of student science literacy by using PQ4R strategy through chemistry worksheets

Abstract

Student Chemistry worksheets (called Lembar Kerja Mahasiswa) have been designed and developed through applying strategy Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) in Chemistry Education, School of Teacher and Training (FKIP), Universitas Riau. LKM is purposed to fulfill the student^s needs which is one of the competencies is that students be able to understand the chemistry concepts after they had read the passages. The LKM is used in Chemistry English Courses that the objective is equipping students to be able to understand Chemistry textbooks. In accordance with the CLO (competence Learning Outcomes) of this course, students will able to express the discourse available in LKM. They express their own words related to reading text. LKM design and develop by adoption of Plomp designed method. The product/prototype is validated by experts .expecially on content, construct validation and language aspects. After the product meets the validation standards, LKM is being tested and used for pretest-posttest for limited imlementation. The results show that LKM can improve students^ understanding of chemical concepts as well as improve their performance based on authentic assessment results.
