Interpersonal Skills Development Through Sports and Physical Education: A Literature Review

Abstract

Sport and physical activity provide many benefits including physical benefits, non-physical benefits and social benefits. Furthermore, sports and physical activity provide benefits to human development, one of which is life skills. This review article aims to provide an overview of the development of interpersonal skills as part of life skills in the context of sports and physical education. Interpersonal skills are described as consisting of interpersonal communication, team work and social skills. This article uses the literature review method of articles databases. Research articles are reviewed based on research methods, participants and research results. The results of the review of the article are known to general information, the methods or approaches used are divided into quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods and literature studies. Participants came from various groups, ranging from pre-school age children, university students, middle school students, elementary school students, and adults. The results of the review state the benefits of participation in sports and physical education on interpersonal skills which include social skills, teamwork and interpersonal communication.Participation in sports and physical education provides benefits to interpersonal skills including social skills, teamwork and interpersonal communication. Interpersonal skills are influenced by several factors such as family, school, peers and the environment.
