Concurrent validity of front-Crowl swimming competence as a Criterion through Measurement of the basic swimming abilites for beginners

Abstract

The aim of study was to examene concurent validity of front-crowl swimming competency as a criterion trought measurement basic swimming ability for estimate swimming distance.. Thirty five student coledges sport science (15), and program study Fisika (20), Age range 19 to 21 years (age 20.2 ± 3.1 years) (famele 16), and (male 19). They are in semester III. Subject catagory of beginner. Applied a direct test measuring the seven components of basic swimming ability. (BSA)- submerge (Sm), floating (Ft), gliding (Gd), leg propulsion (LP), hand propulsion (HP), coordination leg & hand propulsion(CL&HP) , and breath control(BC) as a predictors and freestyle of swimming competence (SC) as criterion. Concurent validity analysis using PPM correlation, and factor analysis using stepweis multiple regression method. Result: Concurent validity between swimming competenscy and each basic swimming ability(BSA) consecutively- CC between Sm-SC, (r = 0.22, p>0.05), CC between Ft- SC (r = 0.16, p>0.05), CC Gd-SC (r = 0.44, p<0.01), LP- SC (r = 0.60, p<0.01), HP-SC (r = 0.60, p<0.01), CL&HP- SC (r = 0.47, p<0.01), BC- SC r = 0.68 (p<0.01). The results of the stepweis regression analysis, only two entred variables were selected significantly (p =<0.05). Model 1, breath control, Coeffecient determination R2 = 0.456 (45.6 %). Model 2, breath control, leg & hand coordination, coefficient detrmination R2 = 0.587 (58.7 %). Conclusions: Basic swimming ability as estimator with swimming competency as criterion, has significant positive concurent validity in the moderat category, except for the the basic ability to dive and float in the weak category. Only two factors are estimated to have the greatest influence on the competence achievment freestyle for beginer namely basic ability to control breathing and coordination of legs & hand.
