Empirical Analysis of Community Sports Participation in West Java

Abstract

To achieve a better quality of life through sports in a population, it is necessary to know the public participation rate in sports in advance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the participation rate of the people of West Java in sports and the kind of sports that are of interest. It is because sport is an important element in maintaining health and fitness to achieve a better quality of life. This research was conducted using a cross-sectional study method involving 18,459 participants in West Java and involved 108 SP3OR volunteers in 27 districts/cities in West Java. The instrument used was a modified IPAQ questionnaire as stated in the guidebook for measuring the participation rate of the West Java community in sports (APMO), the Department of Youth and Sports, West Java Province. The results showed that 51.6% of the people of West Java who became respondents were active in sports, with sports that were of interest, namely: 1) Walking 18.55%- 2) Aerobic Gymnastics 14.40%- 3) Football 13.58%- 4) Volleyball 12.73%- 5) Badminton 10.78%- 6) Cycling 8.77%- 7) Futsal 5.5%- 8) Running 3.98%- 9) Basketball 2.6%- 10) Martial Arts 2.35%- 11) Swimming 1.95%- and 12) Other sports 3.63%. The conclusion of this study shows that the population of people in West Java actively participates in recreational sports activities.
