Abstract
Grinding ball is one of the components in a ball mill machine that function to crush mineral rocks into very fine particles. Each cement plant requires grinding balls in large quantities, so it requires a large enough cost for production. If the grinding ball can be made in Indonesia, the price is expected to be cheaper so that the cost of cement production can be reduced, the price of cement is more affordable, and peoples welfare can be increased. the purpose of this research is to develop a prototype grinding ball in a ball mill so that it can substitute imports abroad, and can produce itself domestically and compete with imported products. The development of a prototype grinding ball in a ball mill using white cast iron materials through a casting process. This development to determine the material properties in relation to physical and mechanical properties through impact test, hardness test, micro structure test, and heat treatment. Hardness test results showed a value of 530.2 BHN hardness for composition 1 and 580 BHN for composition 2. Impact test results showed an impact price of 1.52 J/mm2 for composition 1 and 2.26 J/mm2 for composition 2. Photo structure observations micro structure shows that the micro structure of both compositions consists of carbide, martensite and pearlit.
