Innovation in the new model of Vocational Professional Teacher Education according to the demands of the Industrial Revolution 4.0

Abstract

The development vocational education is very important to produce competitive human resources. Quality vocational education is very much determined by the adequacy and quality of the vocational teacher. Therefore, vocational teacher development is very important. This paper analyzes innovations in new designs of professional teacher education (PTE). Research data were collected through desktop research and focus group discussion methods followed by selected interviews with parties involved in vocational teacher development. Based on the results of the study, the following findings were obtained: (1) Vocational professional teachers are prepared through PTE which is carried out at the Teacher Education Institute appointed by the government of Indonesia for one year with a learning load of 38 credits for pre-service teacher PTE and 6 months with a learning load of 12 credits for in-service teacher PTE after implementation of RPL (recognition of prior learning). (2) The PTE curriculum consists of 3 subjects, namely the Deepening of Pedagogical and content knowledges including advance materials, Development of Lesson Plan and Clinical Practicum (3) The PTE is oriented to the development of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) using the TPACK (Technological and Pedagogical Content Knowledge) approach. (4) Deepening the socio-cultural understanding of students and school environment. (5) Increasing the competence and collaboration between supervisors and tutor teachers through 32 hours of training. (6) Improving the ability to reflect on learning. (7) Increasing leadership skills in learning. (8) Optimizing the use of ICT in PPG by implementing blended learning system in PTE. The innovations in this new PTE model are expected to be able to improve the quality of future vocational teachers in accordance with the demands of the industrial revolution 4.0.
