Numeracy Literacy Ability viewed by Characteristics of Students Way of Thinking a) Departemen Pendidikan Matematika, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Jl. Dr. Setiabudi No. 229, Bandung 40154, Indonesia Abstract Thinking is the cognitive activities that is used to process informations, solve problems, make decisions, and create new ideas. The different ways of thinking produce different ways of solving problem, that effect on numeracy literacy ability. The numeracy literacy is part of mathematical literacy that consisted of two domains, namely change and relationship, and quantity. This study aimed to describe students numeracy literacy ability viewed by characteristics of students way of thinking. This study was qualitative with a phenomenological design. The subjects were eight students of 9th grade of a junior high school in Central Java, Indonesia, who had different characteristics, that are Concrete Sequential (CS), Concrete Random (CR), Abstract Sequential (AS), and Abstract Random (AR). The data were collected by using written test, questionnaire adapted from John Park Le Tellier in DePotter & Hernacki, and interview. The results of this study show that four characteristics of students way of thinking have similar numeracy literacy ability. Each characteristic has its own way to formulate, employ, and interpret the numeracy literacy problems in both domains, however Abstract Sequential (AS) students have more capable to solve the problems than the other three characteristics.
