Abstract

Student learning activities during the pandemic change the way students learn from offline to online. The process of learning from a distance cannot be a reason to escape the obligation to prepare students to face global challenges in the 21st century. One of the skills that must be trained on students is critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the need for STEM-based learning that can improve students^ critical thinking skills. This research is a preliminary study of the needs analysis of physics learning. This study involved 123 respondents at SMAN 4 Jambi City. The instrument used is a list of statements in a questionnaire with a total of 8 items. The method used in this research is descriptive research method, but statements from respondents are calculated and interpreted in the form of percentages. One part of the research results showed that 39% of respondents stated that they had never designed or created a new work or project assignment in the learning process. In addition, the results of this preliminary study also show that 39% of all respondents have never used 4 aspects of STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at the same time in completing a project or task from the teacher. The application of the learning process carried out by students is still not optimal in fulfilling the 4 indicators of critical thinking skills. This research is expected to provide an overview for further research activities in fulfilling efforts to increase critical thinking by using STEM-based learning.
