Abstract

This research is an initial need to develop learning media in the form of e-book that are expected to empower students^ critical explanatory abilities on biology learning. The aim of this research is to know the profile of students^ critical explanatory abilities and how to develop appropriate learning media to empower students^ critical explanatory abilities. This research is the first step in development research that refers to Thiagarajan^s 4-D model, with a type of qualitative research. Data collection and analysis use data in the form of questionnaires^ surveys and document analysis. The analysis was carried out by providing a need analysis questionnaire regarding media learning and students^ critical explanatory capabilities to 17 biology teachers and 70 students are taking biology subjects. Organizing survey data is done by coding according to Saldana (2013). The coding results are then analyzed descriptively. Document analysis results are used to identify learning media that can be used to empower students^ critical explanatory abilities. The results showed that the development of a e-book-based Collegiate Learning Assessment Task that has characteristic problem situations and open-ended questions can be used to train students^ critical explanatory abilities on biology learning.
