Abstract

Learning motivation and understanding of concepts are important aspects of the learning process. This study aims to analyze the learning motivation and understanding of the concepts of high school/MA class XI students on chemical bonds, molecular shapes and intermolecular interactions. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling. The research sample consisted of three SMA/MA in Pekanbaru, namely MAN 1 Pekanbaru, SMAN 2 Pekanbaru and SMAIT Al-Fityah Pekanbaru. The participants in this study were 42 students of class XI consisting of the three schools. Assessment of learning motivation questionnaire based on the Guttman scale. The test questions for conceptual understanding of chemical bonds, molecular shapes and interactions between molecules are in the form of multiple choice questions with choices A, B, C, D and E. The instruments are arranged according to the indicators of understanding the concepts and materials. Data has been collected using Google Forms. The results showed that the students^ motivation to learn chemistry was still low, namely 49.5%. Understanding of students^ concepts on the material of chemical bonds, molecular shapes and molecular interactions is still relatively low with an average percentage of 31.7%.
