Abstract
The improvement of sports culture includes theoretically, not only values, habits and active participation in sports, but also human-designed facilities and infrastructure to support the manifestation of these values, habits and active participation. The study of sports culture, therefore, touches not only sports knowledge and sporting culture, but also the noble values of sports, which is none other than sportmanship as opposed to gamesmanship.
This study applied an internet mediated survey research design. The population of this study is students of General High School (SMA) and Vocational High School (SMK) throughout Indonesia. The sampling procedure followed snow-ball sampling technique. The sample size was determined based on the time limit for submitting the online questionnaire. The data were analyzed by three analytical techniques, namely: descriptive statistics, single mean t-test, two independent group mean tests, and correlational techniques.
The findings indicate that the sporting culture of Indonesian youth has met the eligibility criteria, while their sports orientation is below the appropriate criteria. There is no difference in the sporting culture between General High School and Vocational High School students, but there is a difference in sportmanship between the two groups. Empirical data support the conclusion that the higher the sports culture, the lower the level of their sportsmanship.
