Abstract

The use of project based learning is one of the key elements being encouraged in the new school curriculum in Indonesia. This study investigates the impact of science fair activity on students^ experiences and learning outcomes. The science fair was prepared and held as a project for one of the university level courses for chemistry teacher candidates. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data collection from a Likert questionnaire and qualitative data from artifacts as well as researcher^s notes.

The Likert questionnaire was designed around six major themes: Improvement in understanding, group work and collaboration, poster presentation, experiment demonstration, impact on student^s interest, and green chemistry. The artifacts used for qualitative data include the posters, in-situ experiments, as well as videos of the experiments prepared beforehand. Researcher^s notes are made not only during science fair, but also the preparation process.

Findings from the quantitative analysis indicate positive responses from students, highlighting the science fair^s effectiveness in improving their understanding of chemistry concepts, fostering collaboration, and enhancing interest in the subject. The qualitative analysis of artifacts provided valuable insights into students^ creativity, presentation skills, and experimental demonstrations. Additionally, the notes highlighted the quality of group collaboration students^ engagement.
