Abstract

Low self-determination is still a particular problem for many martial arts athletes. It causes athlete^s poor performance in the combat. This study aims to improve self-determination of martial arts athletes in facing and performing the combat through the use of self-instruction techniques. This research is a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. 28 martial arts athletes, who were also UPI students, participate in this study. They took pre-test, followed 6 sessions of motivation training and group coaching in order to learn and practice self instruction technique, lastly, they took post-test. The research tools included self-determination scale and combat performance assessment sheet. Both tests have high validity and reliability. The data was analyzed quantitatively using statistical tools, such as paired t test and product-moment correlation analysis. The results showed that there was a significant difference between groups of athletes who had learned and practice self-instruction techniques and who had not (t value = 14.309 , *sig = 0.000). Also, there was moderate-strong relationship between self-determination and combat performance of martial arts athletes (r = 0.766). Conclusion : Self determination are essential factor that support martial art athletes to win the competition and show endurance also strength along the combat. The martial arts from psychological view are critical and important. We need more researches in this field.
