Abstract

Shooting skills are very complex, often athletes have to be faced with situations that require one shot to get a perfect score but also need to maintain the concentration as well as the pull of the trigger. The purpose of this study was to figure out the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercise on increasing concentration and performance scores of 10-meter pistol and rifle shooting. A total of 12 athletes consisting of seven female participants and five male participants were recruited for this study. They were randomly assigned to the two study conditions, the PMR group (n = 6) and the control (n = 6). Pre-test and post-test control group design was used in this study. Shooting performance scores were measured before and after the six-week exercise period, which consisted of 17 PMR sessions. Concentration Grid Test was used to measure concentration while the 10-meter shooting test performance scores were measured using 60 shots for men and women. Data analysis using SPSS with a Paired sample T-test showed that there is a difference in the effect between PMR and conventional training methods on increasing concentration and 10-meter shooting scores, and showed that PMR has a more significant result. To improve the concentration level in the mental training process for shooters, and obtain perfect shot performance scores, coaches need to provide a form of training that suits particular characteristics of the sport and pays attention to other factors such as physical and technical factors to get maximum athlete performance.
