Abstract
Physical self-concept has an important role in relation to a healthy and active lifestyle. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in physical self-concept between adolescents living in rural and urban areas and based on gender. The cross-sectional observations of this study involved 101 (51 male and 50 female) high school students in West Java, Indonesia. Participants filled out the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) questionnaire consisting of 40 question items. Univariate analysis showed there is no difference between adolescent PSCs in rural and urban areas (p> .05), but there was a significant interaction between residence and gender (p <.05). Meanwhile, the Post-Hoc test showed that there were differences in PSC between adolescent girls living in urban areas and urban male adolescents and rural male adolescents (p <.05). The conclusions from this study indicate that PSC is not influenced by residence, but is more influenced by gender. Based on these conclusions, the right strategy in PSC intervention as an effort to increase physical activity in adolescence is to pay more attention to gender factors.
