Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to changes in the way humans interact, which affects preferences for the use of urban spaces. Public spaces must be part of the response to the pandemic, to prevent the spread of the virus as well as to provide facilities for daily activities. Public life is a necessity, so it needs to redefine the concept of public space to adapt the COVID-19 pandemic condition. This study aims to reformulate the characteristic of public space which can be a means of public life adaptation during the covid-19 pandemic through a study of people preferences for the use of public space in Jakarta. The study was conducted using a google form questionnaire addressed to residents of Jakarta and its surroundings. The results show an increasing interest in open spaces, especially sports facilities and neighborhood parks which has characteristic of compatibility, openness, and diversity. Urban communities choose open spaces where they can get healthy open air as an expression of boredom to stay at home and awareness to maintain stamina by exercising. They also consider the flexibility to maintain physical distancing and the availability of facilities to implement protocols to prevent the spread of the disease. In addition, the visual quality and attractive design, easy accessibility, and the variety of activities are also the reasons for choosing public spaces. Those are characteristics to redefine public spaces to adapt public life during pandemic covid-19
