Abstract

The use of renewable energy in the form of solar power plants and wind power plants in Indonesia continues to increase. The intermittent characteristics of renewable energy make the electricity grid unstable. Utilization of generators with high ramping rates such as gas turbines or battery as storage technology can be done to overcome the intermittent, but it can increase the cost of production. Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) functions to store energy from the production of renewable plants and stabilize large electricity systems. The purpose of this study is to map the potential of PSH in Indonesia and study the technology. Potential mapping is carried out using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) mapping and analysis method with Geographic Information System (GIS)-based applications. Review of PSH technology is carried out by examining the use of PSH. From the analysis and discussion, it was found that locations with a Head value (m) of more than 200 m were widely distributed in Papua, Central Sulawesi, & Nangroe Aceh Darussalam. Viewed from the work system, PSH is divided into open-loop type, closed-loop type, and pump-back storage type. The pump-turbine configuration on the PSH is divided into single speed unit (conventional PSH) and adjustable speed units.
