Abstract

Adaptive reasoning is one of mathematical proficiency strand. It refers to the capacity of reflecting, explaining, justifying, and thinking logically about concepts and situations. It helps students in constructing their idea in solving mathematical problems. In the other hand, some previous studies stated that gender significantly influence student mathematical proficiency. This study was carried out to analyze students^ adaptive reasoning in solving Pythagoras Theorem problems viewed by gender. There were 31 students participated as the subject in this study- 14 males and 17 females. They were the second grade of two senior high schools in South of Aceh. There were several steps in conducting this study- formulating the problems, validating problems, conducting the test, and interview. The problems were formulated based on the adaptive reasoning indicators and curriculum. Then they were validated by two lecturers and a teacher. Furthermore, the test was carried out during 20 minutes for answering 4 problems. Afterword, the interviews were held for several students to clarify and ensure their answer on the test. This study showed that most of female students had average score of adaptive reasoning in solving Pythagoras Theorem, whereas male student tend to have the highest or the lowest score in the class. Based on this study, it was recommended that future studies to investigate all the strands of mathematical proficiency and involves a large numbers of students.
