Abstract

Each student has a thought process that tends to be diverse and unique in solving a mathematical problem. The thought process is influenced by her/his understanding of a concept. This study aims to describe ways of thinking and ways of understanding of students in solving problems of sequence and series viewed by gender factor. The research method is qualitative research with phenomenology design. The technique of data analysis used observations, interviews, and tests. The research subject were students of grade XI of a senior high school in Pekanbaru. The results showed that male students ways of thinking and ways of understanding tends to use semi conceptual thinking process in solving the problem of sequence and series, where as the female students ways of thinking and ways of understanding tends to use conceptual thinking process in solving the problem of sequence and series. The analysis of this study can be used as material for consideration to make learning designs on the sequence and series material that are in accordance with the ways of thinking and ways of understanding of students.
