Alternative energy in primary school: A teachers^ idea to present idea through SFH (STEM from Home)

Abstract

Most of the energy used by households and industry is produced from fossil fuels. The energy is believed to run out someday and pollute the environment. Because of that, alternative energy is compulsory content for primary school students. They are expected to earn an understanding of how to produce these energies in the future. The research aims to break the assumption that teaching alternative energy content with the STEM approach must be a face-to-face meeting. The content could be delivered from home by using virtual meetings. It is called SFH (STEM from Home). The research is Research and Development with ADDIE (Analysis - Design - Development - Implementation - Evaluation) developing model. The teacher argued that the raw material of alternative energy that is produced electricity should be found easily in their surroundings. Because of that, the raw material of alternative energy should be abundant and sustainable e.g. sea waves, wind, or household wastes. Presenting videos on Youtube was the choice of the teacher to stimulate and inspire students on how to produce alternative energy which was green and economic. The strategy was applied in the classroom. The result showed students earned the fundamental understanding of beneficial alternative energies. In students^ opinion, the source of potential alternative energy is sea wave for students because it is eco-friendly and sustainable. Because of pandemic COVID-19, students faced difficulties to show up engineering design process (EDP) to produce simple tools. Generally, SFH equipped students with fundamental understandings of alternative energy and the learning activities both hands-on and mind-on.
