Abstract
Problem solving is one of the abilities that must be mastered by students. Problem solving abilities can be influenced by gender factors. The purpose of this research was to obtain a description of students mathematical problem solving abilities on the topic systems of linear equations in two variables viewed by gender. This research was a qualitative research with a phenomenological design. The subjects in this research were students of grade 8th of a junior high school in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatera. There were 6 students selected consisting of 3 male and female students. The data were collected by using test, interview, and documentation. The results showed that the male students are unable to understand the problems, plan the solutions, solve the problems, and validate the solutions. Meanwhile, the female students are able to understand the problems, but they are unable to plan the solutions, solve the problems, and validate the solutions.
