Abstract
The ability of symbolic representation is one of the important abilities to be owned by students. One of the factors influencing the ability of symbolic representation is the initial mathematical ability of students. Therefore, this study aims to describe the ability of symbolic representation on Junior High School students in solving cube problems based on the level of initial mathematical ability. The type of study was qualitative. The subjects of the study were three students consisting of one student with high, moderate, and low initial abilities. Data collection techniques were carried out using tests and interviews. The results showed that the student with a high initial mathematical ability was able to fulfill the indicators of solving problems by involving mathematical expressions and making mathematical equations or models from the representations given. The student with a moderate initial mathematical ability was only able to fulfill the indicator of making mathematical equations or models from the representations given. The student with a low initial mathematical ability was not able to fulfill all indicators of symbolic representation ability.
