A Preliminary Study on Interactive Learning Multimedia Development for Enhancing Students^ Scientific and Digital Literacy

Abstract

Scientific and digital literacy have been emerging issues during the digital transformation agenda in Indonesia. One of strategy of increasing both students^ scientific and digital literacy is by using interactive learning multimedia. However, the learning multimedia shall meet students and science teachers^ needs. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the need of science teacher and students of grade VIII Junior high school for developing interactive multimedia learning. This is a quantitative research using survey method. Data were collected by literature studies and questionnaire on teachers^ and students^ need as well as open interview with science teacher in one of public junior high school in Makassar. The research sample consisted of 5 science teachers and 22 students of public junior high school in Makassar. Result shown 60% of science teachers used Microsoft Powerpoint in creating learning media, while another 40% used handbook as a learning media. Besides, the science teachers considered Pressure on Matters as one of difficult subject to be taught in grade 8th, due to its^ abstract concept and the limitation of laboratory equipments. In addition, 50% of students stated that they were difficult to understand the science concepts and 70% of them said that they never conducted science experiment during the online learning. It can be concluded that interactive learning multimedia is highly needed to support the process of science learning in school, particularly in the subject of pressure on matter. The multimedia will be equipped with learning materials, virtual laboratory, quiz, and scientific and digital literacy values.
