Phinisi Ship Explorations as Mathematics Learning Resources: Ethnomathematical Study

Abstract

Phinisi ship is a traditional wooden boat originating from Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi Province. The Bulukumba people^s knowledge in making phinisi has been recognized by UNESCO since 2017 by making phinisi an intangible world cultural heritage. This study aims to explore the concept of geometric ethnomathematics contained in the phinisi ship. The method used in this research is an exploratory-descriptive method through an ethnographic approach. Research data were collected through literature review, observation of the shape and process of making phinisi, and interviews with expert phinisi shipbuilders. The data analysis technique used is an interactive model: data reduction, data display, and verification. The results show that there are ethnomathematical concepts of flat and spatial geometry in components of the phinisi ship. This ethnomathematical concept has relevance to the formal mathematical concepts learned in school. The ethnomathematical concept of geometry contained in phinisi is triangle contained in the shape of the sail, rectangle found on the hull board, spatial geometry in the form of a beam containing the ship^s keel component, and space geometry in the form of a cone found on the ship^s peg component.
