Connection Between Basic Mathematics Ability and Problem-Solving Ability to Science Learning Outcomes

Abstract

. The basic mathematical abilities of students can affect understanding in science learning. This study aims to analyze the relationship between basic mathematics skills and the ability to solve problems in science learning outcomes. The subjects of this study were 30 8th grade students on the topic of substance pressure. The approach in this research is quantitative with the type of correlation. The results show that the basic mathematical abilities of students are very diverse. This can be seen from the average test scores obtained by 4 students who have mathematical abilities with a percentage of 13.3%, 14 categories of moderate students with a percentage of 46.7% and 12 students in the low category with a percentage of 40%. Meanwhile, the students^ problem solving ability showed that 4 students were in the high category with a percentage of 13.3%, 24 students were in the medium category with a percentage of 80% and 2 students were in the high category with a percentage of 6.7%. At the significance level = 0.05, the result is that Ho is rejected if tcount > ttable (2,055 >2,048) and Ha is accepted. Thus, there is a significant relationship between basic math skills and problem solving science learning outcomes.
