Chemistry Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University, Jl. Ir. Sutami 36A Kentingan, Surakarta, 57126, Indonesia

Abstract

Systems thinking in chemistry education emphasizes the interdependence between components. In the context of chemistry, systems thinking not only considers reactions and processes, but students are also required to be able to consider where chemical materials/tools come from, how these materials/tools are used, and the impact of using chemical materials/tools on life. Spectrophotometry courses involving sophisticated analytical instruments such as AAS are often taught without involving the chemical context associated with everyday life. Therefore, this study intends to analyze students^ systems thinking in AAS lessons that involve the context of chemistry in everyday life. A qualitative research approach with a survey method using an open questionnaire was used in this study. This questionnaire is intended to reveal students^ attitudes towards systems thinking skills and their perceptions concerning the usefulness of using AAS in daily life. A total of 38 students participated as subjects in this study. This study indicates that students have good attitudes and perceptions about the usefulness of the context of using AAS. Attitudes and perceptions about the context of the usefulness of using AAS will make learning meaningful
