Abstract
Limited water availability with rapid population growth poses a critical problem for global water security, an effective strategy is needed to balance consumption and supply over time while maintaining water quality. There are various types of water treatment technologies that have been developed such as membrane filtration, ion exchange, and water adsorption. Chitosan-based hydrogels have become an attractive focus as water treatment materials because of their low prices, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. This article is a narrative review on the development of chitosan-based composite hydrogels using various precursors and their applications as adsorbents in water treatment through the adsorption method. The mechanism of pollutant adsorption on the chitosan composite hydrogel was described systematically.
