Moslem College Students Perception on Theory of Evolution

Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to determine perception of moslem college students about the theory of evolution using MATE (Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution) instrument. The sample in this study consisted of 79 of Biology and Biology Education students, 96 Mathematical Science students, 46 social science and religion students. The results showed 65,61% moslem college students have not accepted and only 5,43% have accepted the theory of evolution, 28,96% neutral. Among the five evolution concepts, the concept of the process of evolution is the lowest acceptance concept. Compared to other majors, social science and religion students are more neutral towards the acceptance of the theory of evolution. Acceptance of the theory of evolution was not influenced by gender, High School background (Pesantren/Non-Pesantren) but it was influenced by the background of the religious affiliation that is followed, students with an NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) organizational background are more accepting of the theory of evolution than other organizations.
