Abstract
Background: Adolescents face a variety of challenges such as schooling and further education, which can have an impact on their physical health. Depression and sleep quality have a direct impact on health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Hatha Yoga exercises on depression and sleep quality in adolescents.
Methods: This study was designed as a 20-week randomized controlled trial of a Hatha Yoga intervention with 60 Chinese adolescents, including a yoga exercise group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used before, during and after the experiment to monitor the effect of Hatha Yoga intervention on depression and sleep quality in adolescents.
Results: In this paper, we confirmed the health-promoting effect of Hatha Yoga exercise on adolescents by expanding the sample size, extending the duration of the experiment, and matching the control group.Using a mixed-measures ANOVA, there were significant differences in Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores in the yoga group before and after the experiment (p<0.001).After the intervention, depression scores were significantly lower and sleep quality was improved in the yoga group.Depression scores and sleep quality in the control group did not change significantly before and after the experiment (p>0.001).
Conclusion: Hatha yoga exercises can relieve depression, improve the quality of their sleep and relieve their stress in teenagers.
