Abstract
The expected outcome of the sport and physical education policy is not only a good life but also a good life. Almost all conceptualizations of a good living always include physical fitness and psychological well-being. A good life is indicated by, among other things, a noble character which in sports studies is called sportsmanship. The number of antisocial and antimoral behavior in everyday life reflects the failure to internalize the values of sportsmanship through learning in sports and physical education. How is the level of sportsmanship of Indonesians, both those who are in school and those who live in the midst of society? What sportsmanship values have been successfully taught? What sportsmanship values have not been successfully educated? This national level student survey applies an internet mediated research approach. A sample of 5,858 students, from elementary school to university level, have responded to an inventory of their sportsmanship, gender, and school level. Besides being described based on indicators of character, courage, dedication and commitment, fair play and honesty, excellence in performance, fun and joy, health, respect for rules and laws, respect for self and other participants, data were also analyzed by comparing gender and education level. The findings illustrate how strong the desire of all respondents to win in every match and competition. Almost all respondents showed the spirit of gamesmanship and not sportsmanship. There is a difference in the spirit of sportsmanship between men and women. However, there is no difference in the spirit of sportsmanship because of the level of education. Physical education and sports have not been effective as strategies for civilizing noble character as aspired by the spirit of the Olympics. Practical and policy advice, based on the findings of this national survey.
