Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the integration of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) approaches in science education for fostering character development and societal engagement among students. The study employed a case study methodology, focusing on SMAN 1 Kalabahi as the research site. The primary objectives were to observe the enhancement of student engagement, promote ethical awareness, and establish connections between scientific concepts and real-world issues. The research utilized a combination of classroom observations, interviews with teachers and school administrators, document analysis, and closed-ended questionnaires. The findings revealed several positive outcomes of the STS integration, including increased student motivation, a deeper understanding of scientific concepts, and a sense of responsibility towards societal needs. The project successfully created a collaborative and inclusive learning environment, encouraging students to actively participate in class discussions and engage with community issues. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the benefits of integrating STS approaches in science education and provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to enhance character development and societal engagement among students. The findings highlight the significance of connecting science education with real-world contexts to foster the development of characterful citizens prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
