Abstract
Tiga Island Natuna has coral reef potential. Biology teachers who live on Natuna Island have not utilized the potential of coral reefs as one of the contextual teaching materials to facilitate students in understanding the lesson. This study aimed to produce a teaching material that included the potential of coral reefs in Tiga Island Natuna on the subject of ecosystem to improve student environmental literacy. The research method used was descriptive analysis. The study began with an exploration of the environmental conditions in coral reef ecosystems and a potential inventory of the existing ecosystems. The results of both exploration and inventory were described in a book used as the teaching material. The results showed that the coral reef ecosystems in Tiga Island Natuna were still in good condition. Climatic conditions of coral reef ecosystems in Natuna Island affected the variety of living things (biotic components) around them. Living creatures found in coral reef ecosystems included- various types of corals, phytoplankton, algae, zooplankton, porifers, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, herbivorous fishes, bacteria, and fungi. The potential of coral reefs in Tiga Island Natuna could be inserted in biology learning, especially on the subject of the ecosystem in class X in one of public Senior High Schools (SMA) there. The potential of coral reef ecosystems in Tiga Island Natuna was presented in the form of an interesting teaching material which increased student environmental literacy.
