Question from Ms. Sheila Wahyu Kamila

Asalamu^alaikum ..

I want to know, from the various journals that you analyze, have you found articles
that cited more than three representations in chemistry?
What do you think about mathematics representation? It is the other of chemical
representation or included in the three chemical representations that you have
explained?
Honestly, it makes me confused, especially when classifying chemistry
questions/assessment based on their level of representation.
I hope you can help me by providing information to me according to the analysis
you have done.

Thank you

Wa^alaikumsalam, wr.wb.
Ms. Sheila Wahyu Kamila, sorry for the late responds.
Thank you for your interesting question.

I want to try to answer your question about three levels of representation and
hope it will give you more information.
Based on our analysis of 75 articles which mentioned level representation in
chemistry, there are some articles which used representation more than 3 level.
In the following, I would like to describe some of those representation.
1. Macro, Submicro, Symbolic, Multiple, Hybrid, Mixed
These representation^s type can be implemented if you want to identify
representation used in the chemistry textbook. There are 5 researchers who do
the same.
2. Macroscopic, Symbolic, Particulate, Multiple, Hybrid, Mixed, Integrated,
Combined
This new type expanded No. 1 representation^s type . It also can be
implemented to identify representation used in the chemistry textbook.
3. Macroscopic, Microscopic, Symbolic, Algebra
Nakhleh & Krajick (1994) add algebra level to 3 levels representation by
Johnstone. So, there are 4 levels representation. Only one researcher who used
this type within 11 years based on our analysis.
May be this explanation can also answer your next question about mathematic
representation. Many researchers use symbolic level that involves mathematic
representation. They distinguish algebra level and symbolic level. Symbolic level
involves chemical equations, diagrams, molecular and structure drawings while
algebra level involves formulas and graphs, such as calculation of pH,
concentration, etc. So we can conclude that mathematic representation was
included in algebra level.

And many more. Based on my explanation, there are more various view of three
levels and there is no agreement on which term should be used. These view
come from needs in research, such as chemistry topic that used in study and
the propose of study. I think you can refer to appropriate articles with your work
to make it easier.

Thank you.
