Case:
Try to pay attention to Figure 5.1. The picture tells the event of a large smog
(The Great Smog) that struck the City of London, England. Fog smoke event
occurred in 1952 to the residents^ shock. At that time, London was covered with
dark clouds that are not rain clouds, but are clouds that contain fog and smoke
containing SO2 gas. SO2 gas contained in smoke due to air pollution due to the
use of coal. As a result of air pollution, a thick layer of haze formed in the sky of
London. The pollution lasted from Friday, 5 December to Tuesday, 9 December
1952, then pollution spread rapidly throughout the city. This event occurs in
winter due to cold weather mixed with anticyclone meteorological phenomena
(large-scale wind circulation with high atmospheric pressure) and windy weather
conditions. Based on medical reports, more than 4,000 people died and 100,000
more experienced acute respiratory distress due to inhaling fog. This event is a
rare event because it reaches a very high mortality rate. Therefore, this event is
considered the worst air pollution in British history and has had a major
influence on environmental research, government regulations, and public
awareness about the relationship between clean air conditions and health.
Smoke fog or better known as smog (smoke and fog) is a type of heavy air
pollution that can occur within a certain period of time, either for days or
months. Smoke is a dispersion of solids in gases. Fog is the dispersion of water
particles in the air. Fog occurs when hot air that contains water vapor suddenly
cools down so that some of the water vapor experiences condensation.
