Abstract

Life skills are considered as an important thing in going through all changes in the future. Several recent studies state that sport is the best means to develop life skills (Hemphill et al., 2019). (Mossman et al., 2021) stated that there is a significant relationship between coaches and life skills. However, in this study, it is still not known what type of coach can develop the life skills of the athlete. This study aims to examine the relationship between authoritarian and democratic coach on the athletes life skills. The research design used a correlation study conducted at a petanque sports club with a total of 18 athletes, consisting of 11 male and 7 female with an age range of 12-21 years. The instrument used to measure is a Life Skills Questionnaire which contains 47 questions from (Cronin & Allen, 2017) and the coach type which consists of 4 statements for the authoritarian type and 9 statements for the democratic type (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980). Data analysis used partial and simultaneous correlation test, all data were normally distributed with authoritarian type(0.687), democratic type(0.894), life skills(0.565). In partial hypothesis testing, it was found that the authoritarian type of coach did not have a significant relationship with life skills with a significance of 0.220. Then for the democratic type has a significant relationship with life skills with a significance of 0.007. Furthermore, simultaneously it was found that both types of coach were associated with life skills with a significance of 0.026. This is in accordance with the opinion of (Hemphill et al., 2019) that training programs with humanist coachs have a significant impact on positive athlete development. This study has several limitations including the number of samples and sports. It is hoped that further research can use more samples and sports.

Graduate School of IKIP Budi Utomo Malang

Abstract

The improvement of sports culture includes theoretically, not only values, habits and active participation in sports, but also human-designed facilities and infrastructure to support the manifestation of these values, habits and active participation. The study of sports culture, therefore, touches not only sports knowledge and sporting culture, but also the noble values of sports, which is none other than sportmanship as opposed to gamesmanship.
This study applied an internet mediated survey research design. The population of this study is students of General High School (SMA) and Vocational High School (SMK) throughout Indonesia. The sampling procedure followed snow-ball sampling technique. The sample size was determined based on the time limit for submitting the online questionnaire. The data were analyzed by three analytical techniques, namely: descriptive statistics, single mean t-test, two independent group mean tests, and correlational techniques.
The findings indicate that the sporting culture of Indonesian youth has met the eligibility criteria, while their sports orientation is below the appropriate criteria. There is no difference in the sporting culture between General High School and Vocational High School students, but there is a difference in sportmanship between the two groups. Empirical data support the conclusion that the higher the sports culture, the lower the level of their sportsmanship.

Abstract

Specialization of young athletes too early has been associated with decreased performance, fatigue, and risk of injury, although not much is known for sure. Parents and coaches are the athlete^s support system for success. However, the lack of knowledge of the athlete^s specialization phase and the possibility of injury in little league baseball need to be investigated to maintain the career of little league baseball athletes. This study uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional study design. Participants as many as 58 parents and 20 coachers have volunteered as respondents in this study. The results show that as many as 43% of parents have understood the specialization phase of athletes, while 53% of coaches have a better understanding of specialization. Parents have a direct influence on the athlete^s specialization. The implications of this research can be used as evaluation material for clubs and federations to convey to parents and coaches to keep athletes from risking injury in the future by following each athlete^s specialization phase correctly.
